Kabuli Chana Count Guide | 44/46, 50/52 and 58/60
What a count means, the sizes in millimetres, and the quality limits that match our product specification

Kabuli Chana (white chickpeas) is traded by seed size, and a quotation such as 44/46, 50/52 or 58/60 is a count. This page explains what the count means, the size in millimetres each count corresponds to, and the quality limits that apply to our exports. Exact numbers for a specific lot are confirmed on the certificate of analysis, not assumed from the grade name.
What a count is
A count is the number of seeds in one ounce (28.35 grams). Because the weight is fixed, a lower count means a larger seed: a 44/46 lot has fewer, bigger seeds than a 58/60 lot. The count is a size band, not a guarantee of colour, cooking performance or purity.
| Count | Approximate seed size |
|---|---|
| 42/44 | about 12 mm |
| 44/46 | about 11 mm |
| 50/52 | about 10 mm |
| 58/60 | about 9 mm |
| 60/62 | about 8 mm |
| 75/80 | about 7 mm |
These are approximate trade sizes, and in-between counts such as 46/48 are traded as well. If seed diameter matters for your process, state the millimetre range in the specification rather than relying on the count alone.
Which count for which use
Larger seed costs more per tonne. Buyers who sell the chickpea whole, in retail packs, cans, salads or roasted snacks, usually pay for 42/44 or 44/46. Buyers who grind or mash it, for hummus or falafel, usually take 58/60 or smaller, where the size does not show. Our daily Kabuli Chana price is a market average across sizes, so a large count sits above it.
Quality limits we ship to
These are the figures on our raw pulses page, and they are what we quote from:
- Moisture: below 12%.
- Admixture: below 2%.
- Purity: 98% and above.
- Infestation: weevil-free, with a fumigation certificate.
Besan (chickpea flour) is milled from Desi Chana dal, not from Kabuli Chana, so if flour is your end use ask us for Desi Chana. For canning, food processing or retail repacking, tell us the end use and we will confirm the right count for it.
Packing
Standard export packing is 25 kg or 50 kg PP bags, with custom bag sizes and printing on request. Net container weight depends on bag size, cargo density and the carrier; it is confirmed on the packing list, not assumed from a fixed figure.
